Youngest of four brothers (Les, Clarrie, Merv and Jack) who served in WWII, Private Duncan Noel Shaw (Service No:NX20947) enlisted in the AIF on 23 May 1940, and was attached to 2/5 Australian Field Coy on 19 October 1940 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for the Middle East. On 20 October 1942 Private Shaw embarked from Kantara for Port Adelaide on board SS Melbourne Star. In August 1942 he marched out to 11 Australian CRE (Works), and was attached to Advanced LHQ on 3 February 1945 when he embarked from Brisbane for Hollandia on board the Duntroon, en route for Morotai. On 27 June 1945 Private Shaw emplaned from Morotai for Brisbane, and was attached to 3 Australian CE (Works) at Discharge on 19 September 1945.

Jack was born in Helensburgh via Woolongong, New South Wales in 1910, sixth of eight children of Robert Thomas Shaw (b1877 at Wattle Flat, Bathurst, New South Wales) and Maude Mary Jane Ingram (b1883 in Glenn Innes, New South Wales). Robert and Maude married in 1900 in Bathurst, and lived there and in Lithgow and Helensburgh via Woolongong before settling in Sydney in 1918. Robert worked as a Labourer.

Jack was a Storeman in Sydney in 1937 when he married Mary (Dot) Dorothy Peard (b1910 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Dot was a Typist in Auburn. Jack and Dot settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Jack worked as a General Mechanic before enlisting in the AIF. Following his Discharge from the Army, Jack and Dot settled in Sydney, where Jack was a Refrigeration Mechanic. Dot died in 1985, and in 1988 Jack remarried to Bernice Joan McQuilty (nee Miller; b1925 in Sydney, New South Wales). Jack died in 1994 and Bernice in 2006.
