How We Served
Looking for the family of; - 5706 Private John Graham Laing (aka John Graham) who had immigrated to Australia from Edinburgh Scotland in 1911 and was employed as a labourer prior to the outbreak of War. John enlisted for War service on the 20th of March 1916 and was allocated to reinforcements fr the 22nd Battalion 1st AIF.
Embarked for England and further training John arrived at Plymouth on the 15th of November and by the 14th of December he had arrived in France and entered into the ‘Bull Ring’ at Etaples to undergo his last phase of training. John joined his Battalion in the field on the 18th of December and would serve in the trenches until he was evacuated following a complete breakdown on the 4th of February 1917.
Sent back to England on the 25th of February for hospitalisation where he was admitted into the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley and by the 21st of July, he was being repatriated home as an invalid suffering from psychosis. Following his arrival in Australia on the 18th of September he was admitted into the 16th Australian General Hospital (Military Mental Asylum) Mont Park, Victoria. On the 29th of August 1918 Johns was officially discharged from the 1st AIF, and would remain on the Asylum’s books until his death whilst in residence on the 18th of August 1934.
Following his passing John was interred within Fawkner Cemetery, Victoria. At the time of John’s enlistment, he had given his next of kin as his cousin Mrs Johana Graham of Moonee Ponds, Victoria
