Bertie joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) and worked at the Lady Gowrie Red Cross convalescent home, Gordon for 6 months before the outbreak of the Second World War. She then enlisted and served at 12 Australian Camp Hospital in the Sydney Showground. After two and a half years she was discharged for health reasons on 19 July 1943, holding the rank of Private. Afterwards she continued for ten years with the VAD at the Lady Gowrie home, nursing former prisoners of war from Changi, among others.
