81 years ago today, on Saturday afternoon of the 31st January 1942, Private John Baxter Smith, 2nd Battalion (Reg No-466), labourer from Flemings Terrace, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 59 or 60. ANGLICAN 1-31. 88. Not married.
Born at Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England about 1881 to ? and O Smith of 7 Oak Street, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom, John enlisted on the 27th August 1914 at Randwick, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 29.7.1915 (diarrhoea), 9.11.1917 (injury to right knee), 7.1.1918 (synovitis right knee).
On leave to France from the 8.5.1916 to the 18.5.1916.
John returned home on the 29th September 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 15th October 1918.
Mr. Smith’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not located inscribed on any other known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of John’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
