Henry George Symons, affectionately known as "Harry," was born on 6 May 1921 in Geelong, Victoria. Eager to serve his country during World War II, he enlisted in the Australian Army on 21 June 1940. To meet the age requirements for enlistment, he stated his birth year as 1919, effectively making himself two years older.
Upon enlistment, Henry was assigned the service number VX33694 and joined the 2nd/2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). This regiment was part of the 1st Anti-Aircraft Brigade and was deployed to the Middle East, including regions such as Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt. Equipped with 3.7-inch anti-aircraft guns, the unit played a crucial role in defending Allied forces against aerial attacks.
Throughout his service, Henry attained the rank of Bombardier. After his military service, he returned to Australia and lived a long and fulfilling life.
Harry married the love of his life, Thelma Hickson and went on to have two children. Lynne and Wayne, along with 6 grand children - Rod, Luke, Chad, Marcail, Zoe & Holly, then having 12 great grandchildren.
In the early years he owned and ran the mobile service station in Highton and also owned a Milkbar in Belmont, Victoria. Known by many, always there to help and support when needed. A strong person in the community and loved very much by all in his family.
Henry George Symons passed away on 4 January 2020 and was laid to rest in Highton, Victoria.
