Corporal Ronald Stewart Sandilands (Service No:VX130903) initially served in the ACMF as a Private (Service No:V150873) with 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station (14 February 1942 - 11 April 1943). Private Sandilands (graded Cook) was at Greta NSW with 107 Casualty Clearing Station (CCS) when he enlisted in the AIF on 12 April 1943. Promoted to Corporal in January 1944, he served with 70 Camp Hospital before embarking from Townsville for Balikapan via Morotai on 10 May 1945. Corporal Sandilands served with 2/6 Field Ambulance in Morotai, Balikapan and Macassar and embarked from Balikapan for Brisbane on board the Kanimbla on 30 July 1945. Corporal Sandilands was attached to 2/3 Casualty Clearing Station (CCS) at Discharge on 20 August 1946. His father, John Graham Sandilands, served in the Boer War and both WWI and WWII, and sibling Henry served in WWII.

Ron was born in Myrtleford, Victoria in 1922, fourth of eight children of John (Jack) Graham Sandilands (b1881 at Tallygaroopna via Shepparton, Victoria) and Louisa Amelia Schwerkolt (b1890 in Mitcham, Melbourne, Victoria). Jack worked as a Farm Hand for his father and in 1910 in Melbourne, he and Louisa married. By 1912 they had moved to Western Australia, where they lived in Wagin, Fremantle and Perth and Jack worked as a farm Hand, Labourer, Shopkeeper and Machinery Agent before enlisting in WWI. Jack and Louisa moved to Melbourne following WWI and Jack worked as a Shopkeeper and Tramways Employee. During the 1920s, Jack and Louisa settled at Barwidgee via Myrtleford, where Jack was a Dairy Farmer. By 1929 Jack and Louisa had left the farm and lived in Shepparton and then Melbourne, where Jack worked as a Labourer.

Ron was an Apprentice Pastry Cook in Melbourne when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1946 in Melbourne, he married Dorothy Martin (b1918 in Colesberg, South Africa) - Dorothy worked in Melbourne as a Saleswoman. Ron and Dorothy settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Ron was a Pastry Cook. Dorothy died in 1981 and Ron in 1994.
