Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of three brothers (Arthur, Wylie and Cliff) who served in WWII, Private Wylie Irvine Conroy (Service No:VX17162) enlisted in the AIF on 24 May 1940 as a Private attached to 7th Division Supply Column AASC - Driver Motor Transport. Private Conroy served in the Middle East (11 October 1940 - 7 February 1942) and New Guinea (10 August 1942 - 21 October 1943) - 'I saw service in Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Syria, India and New Guinea' (W Conroy; NAA; 1987). Private Conroy was attached to 2/6 Coy AASC at Discharge on 12 September 1945.

Wylie was born in Ararat, Victoria in 1916, fifth of seven children of Arthur John Conroy (b1886 at Mokepilly Station via Stawell, Victoria) and Adeline (Ada) May Hon (b1886 in Stawell, Victoria). Arthur and Ada married in 1909 in Ararat, where they settled and raised their family and Arthur was an Attendant at the Mental Asylum.

Wylie worked in Ararat as a Labourer and Apiarist before enlisting in the Army in 1940. Following his Discharge, he returned to Ararat and in 1948 married Kathleen Joyce Parsons (b1923 in Warracknabeal, Victoria). Wylia and Kathleen settled in Ararat, where they raised their family and Wylie worked at the Mental Asylum - initially as an Attendant and later as a Male Nurse. Wylie died in 1992 and Kathleen died in 1994.
