Stephen was born at Saint Mary's, Isles of Scilly, United Kingdom on the 5th November 1886 or 1887 to Stephen and Elizabeth Pender; husband of Isabel Pender nee Green (married 1921, died 1984), and enlisted March 1915 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Mentioned in Despatches for his work at Ismailia, Egypt, Mr Pender returned home on the 8th July 1917, and his unit was demobilised.

Stephen re-enlisted 11th July 1918, no other details located.

Warrant Officer Stephen Pender (M.I.D.), 1st Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train, Water Police Constable from Watt Street Police Barracks (Water Police Station), Newcastle, New South Wales and Soldier's Club, George Street, Sydney, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 23rd December 1964, age 78. CATHOLIC 3-85. 8.

57 years ago today, on the 23rd December 1964, Warrant Officer Stephen Pender, 1st Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train (Reg No-42), Water Police Constable from Watt Street Police Barracks (Water Police Station), Newcastle, New South Wales and Soldier's Club, George Street, Sydney, N.S.W., father of two (Patrica and Kathleen), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 78. CATHOLIC 3-85. 8.

Born at Saint Mary's, Isles of Sicilly, United Kingdom on the 5.11.1886 or 1887 to Stephen and Elizabeth Pender; husband of Isabel Pender nee Green (married 1921, Lambton, N.S.W., died 1984, sleeping here), Stephen enlisted March 1915 at Sydney, N.S.W.
Mentioned in Despatches for his work at Ismailia, Egypt, 11.12.1915.

Stephen returned home on the 8th July 1917 (unit demobilised). Discharged on the 24th July 1917.

Stephen reenlisted on the 6th July 1918, discharged on the 18th August 1919, no other details located.

Mr. Pender’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle District Police Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 24th July 1918, 8 names inscribed, 4 Fallen) and the Surry Hills N.S.W. Police Force Roll of Honour WW1. 

I have placed poppies at Stephen’s gravesite in remembrance of his service for God, King & Country.
