Sapper Athol George Smith (Service No:TX4536) first served with the Militia (Private; Service No:238519) with 16 Field Brigade from 29 November 1938 to 6 July 1940. On 27 March 1941 he enlisted in the AIF (Sapper; 2/5 Australian Field Coy RAE). Sapper Smith served in the Middle East (3 September 1941 - 25 March 1942), twice in New Guinea - Owen Stanley (7 August 1942 - 23 January 1943) and Lae (9 August 1943 - 9 March 1944) - and in Balikapan (23 May 1945 - 10 December 1945). Sapper Smith was attached to 2/7 Australian Division Provost Coy at Discharge on 18 December 1945.
Born in 1920 at St Mary's in Tasmania, Athol was the third of eleven children of Albert Montague Smith (b1894 in Oatlands, Tasmania) and Rose Ethel Cutler (b1893 in Evandale, Tasmania). Albert served in WWI (Private; Service No:1248) and he and Rose married in Launceston in 1916. They lived in St Marys and St Leonards where Albert was a Labourer, Cleaner and Driver.
Athol worked as a Bench Hand and Railway Employee in Launceston, where in 1943 he married Florence (Jan) Jean Thomas (b1916 in Oatlands, Tasmania). Athol and Jan lived in Launceston and Deloraine where Athol worked as a Storeman, Fireman, Motor Mechanic, Driver and Real Estate Salesman. Athol died in 1999 and Jan in 2007.
