Private Gilbert Henry Witney (Service No:VX27732) enlisted in the Amry on 2 July 1940 and was attached to 6th Training Battalion. Private Witney served with 2/8th and 4th Training Battalions, Motor Transport Coy and 6 Division Ammunition Column, and was in Darwin, NT in 1942. Private Witney was attached to 2/3 Coy Australian Army Services Corps (AASC) at Discharge on 26 February 1944. Four of his siblings served with the RAAF in WWII.

Gilbert was born in Dimboola, Victoria in 1911, seventh of ten children of Walter William Witney (b1870 in Dimboola, Victoria) and Emelie (Millie) Pauline Miller (b1879 in Dimboola, Victoria). Walter (a Farmer) and Millie married in Dimboola in 1901, and lived in Dimboola, Jeparit and Warracknabeal where they raised their family and Walter was a Farmer.

Gilbert started work as a Farm Hand and then was a Farmer at Culgoa in Wycheproof in partnership with his brother. Following his Discharge, Gilbert returned to Culgoa and in 1951 married  Margaret Bery Stahl (b1913 in Wycheproof, Victoria). Gilbert and Margaret lived in Bendigo and Ballarat where Gilbert was a Farmer before returning to Wycheproof in the 1970s where Gilbert worked as an Agent. Gilbert died in 1979 and Margaret in 1988.
