Sergeant Rex McLaren Salter (Service No:TX15683) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:49637) from 4 October 1940 to 2 September 1943. He had previously enlisted in the Militia on 6 February 1939 as a Corporal attached to 17th heavy Battery. Sergeant Salter was attached to 6 MD District Accounts Office Hobart on 2 September 1943 when he enlisted in the AIF, and was posted to District Accounts Office QLD in 1944. Sergeant Salter served in New Guinea (6 December 1944 - 13 November 1945) with District Accounts Office NG and was attached to 57th Autralian Army Field Cash Office at Discharge on 19 November 1945. Siblings Ted and Don also served in WWII.
Rex was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1921, second of three children of Eric Harold Salter (b1892 in St Marys, Tasmania) and Eileen Victoria Nichols (b1894 in Richmond, Tasmania). Eric served in WII (Lieutenant; Service No:2276) and had worked as a Railway Porter in St Marys and Oaklands before he enlisted. Eric was a Clerk with the Department of Treausry in Hobart in 1919 when he and Eileen married. They settled in Hobart where they raised their family and Eric served as a Lieutenant in the Army Resrves and worked as a Clerk.
Rex was a Clerk in Hobart when he enlisted in the Army. In 1941 in Hobart he married Constance Joyce Amelia Cooper (b1918 in Hobart, Tasmania). Following his Discharge, Rex and Constance divorced and in 1949 in Hobart, Rex married Christina Muriel Roberts (b1926 in Warracknabeal, Victoria) - Christina was a Nurse in Portland, Victoria. Rex and Christina settled in Portland, Victoria where they raised their family and Rex was a Clerk with the Department of Labour and National Service. Rex and Christina separated in the 1960s - Rex moved to Sydney NSW where he worked as a Clerk and Christina returned to work as a Nursing Sister. Rex died in 2002 and Christina in 2023.
