Advanced his age to sign up
My father Stan Bassett revealed in later life that he had claimed to have been born in 1918 whereas in fact he was born on 14 February 1919. This was because his mother refused to sign his enlistment papers, which would have stopped him from enlisting. By claiming to have been born a year earlier, he was able to sign the papers himself. It meant though that when he turned 21 in the Middle East he could not share this information with anyone because, in theory at least, he had already turned 21 a year earlier.
