Private Herbert John Dale (Service No:NX9196) enlisted in the AIF on 19 December 1939, and served with the Australian Army Provost Corps in Gourock, Scotland, in the Middle East ('Pte Dale saw service in Africa at the siege of Tobruk' The Biz; Fairfield NSW; Thursday 23 August 1943; p2), and in Bougainville and Torokina. Private Dale was a Craftsman attached to 9 Australian Division Provost Coy at Discharge on 11 October 1945.
Born in Adelong, New South Wales in 1916, Herbert was youngest of two children of John Dale (b1884 in Brighton, Victoria) and Gertrude Ilma Clee (b1888 in Adelong, New South Wales). John was a Labourer in 1909 when he and Gertrude married in Tumut. The couple lived in Gocup via Wagga Wagga, where John was a Labourer. In 1916 when John joined the NSWGR, he and Gertrude settled in Sydney where they raised their family and John was a Railway Employee until retirement in 1950.
Herbert was an unemployed Transport Driver in Sydney in 1939 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1942 in Sydney he married Winsome May Innes (b1917 in Sydney, New South Wales). Following his Discharge from the Army, Herbert and Winsome settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Herbert was a Railway Employee until his death in 1966. Winsome died in 2011.
