Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Corporal John Richard George Ladhams (Service No:WX9499) enlisted in the AIF as a Private on 4 December 1940 and was attached to 1 and 13 Training Battalions. Private Ladhams served with 7 Australian Provost Coy in the Middle East, New Guinea and Borneo - promoted to Corporal in 1943. Corporal Ladhams was attached to 7 Australian Division Provost Coy at Discharge on 28 November 1945. Brothers Alf and Ted also served in WWII.

John was born in Manjimup, Western Australia in 1913, sixth of eight children of John Henry Ladhams (b1882 in Payneham, South Australia) and Violet (Althea) Bevetta Althea Chapman (b1885 in Little Hampton, South Australia). John Snr and Althea married in York in 1905 - John, a Gunner posted to The Forts Albany, deserted in 1905, leaving his clothes on the rocks at Albany to give the impression he had drowned. Arrested in York, he left for Albany under militray escort (Trove; 1905). Althea and their son followed John Snr to Albany, and the family lived in Bridgetown, where John Snr was a Brickmaker. By 1913 John Snr and Althea had settled in Northcliffe, where they raised their family and John Snr was a Settler/Dairy Farmer until his death in 1935.

John worked in Northcliffe as a Labourer and Farm Hand before enlisting in the Army in December 1940. In February 1941 in Pemberton he married Gwenyth Joan Daubney (b1922 in Gloucestershire, England) - Gwenyth immigrated with her family in 1925, arriving in Fremantle on board the Bendigo. Following his Discharge in 1945, John and Gwenyth settled in Northcliffe, where they raised their family and John was a General Carrier and Bulldozer Driver. John died in 1963 and Gwenyth in 2007.
