Private Andrew Jardine Gronbeck (Service No:VX19190) enlisted in the AIF on 29 May 1940 and embarked from Sydney for Kantara on 18 October 1940. Private Gronbeck served in the Middle East with 7 Divisional Supply Column and embarked for Adelaide on 27 March 1942. On 10 August 1942, Private Gronbeck embarked with 2/6 Australian Coy AASC from Brisbane for Gilli Gilli, and embarked on 24 October 1943 from Milne Bay for Cairns on board President Johnson. Private Gronbeck then served in Borneo with 2/6 Australian Coy AASC, embarking from Cairns for Morotai (29 May 1945) on board Jefferson Davies, and from Morotai for Balikapan (30 July 1945) on board LST 1016. Private Gronbeck began the RTA from Balikapan on 29 October 1945, via Morotai en route for Brisbane on board the Kanimbla. Private (Driver) Gronbeck was attached to 7 Australian Division Supply Column at Discharge on 8 November 1945.
Andy was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1919, youngest of five children of William Alexander Gronbeck (b1881 in Glasgow, Scotland) and Marion Johnstone (b1882 in Glasgow, Scotland). William was a Yarn Warper when he and Marion married in 1904 in Glasgow, where they lived until immigrating to Melbourne, Victoria in 1912. William and Marion settled in Melbourne where William was a Winding Master in the Collingwood Mills before serving in WWI (Private; Service No:4539). Following his Discharge, William and Marion settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and William worked as a Mechanic's Apprentice and then Mechanic.
Andy worked as Labourer before enlisting in WWII, and following his Discharge, returned to Melbourne where he was a Timber Worker in 1953 when he married Eileen Patricia Schleiger (b1927 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Eileen was a Textile Worker in Melbourne. Andy and Eileen settled in Brighton, where Andy was a Labourer until his death in 1957. Eileen remarried and died in 2013.
