My Grandfather, Pomp
My paternal grandfather enlisted at age 36. He had desperately wanted to sign up sooner but his family and industry made it difficult. Finally with a 2 year old son and wife he signed up. A tall, strong man and immediately post the bombing of Darwin, that where he was shipped. Unfortunately his military career was short-lived as he suffered a horrendous head injury with 2/1 Docks Company. A compound fracture to his temporal lobe, he was not expected to survive.
He was transferred between 54 Camp Hospital and NO 1 RAAF hospital. He continued to live despite everything. Finally shipped back to NSW when well enough to travel and ultimately discharged. He lived the rest of his life with terrible headaches and neuralgia. A kind, gentle man never spoke much about any of this history. He was Totally and Per.anently Incapacitated and they did look after him until.his death. I adored him.
