Sergeant William David Gurney (Service Nos:N3762/NX131754) initially served in the ACMF as a Trooper with 6th Light Horse Regiment/6th Motor Regiment from 17 December 1938 to 29 August 1942, enlisting the next day in the AIF. Promoted to Sergeant, he was attached to 3 RAE Training Battalion and 2 Base Store Coy, and at Discharge on 25 June 1946 was attached to 23 ME Park Coy RAE. His three younger siblings - Laurie, Bernie and Lou - also served in WWII.
Bill was born in Cowra, NSW in 1915, eldest of six children of William Gurney (b1889 in Boorowa, NSW) and Edith Ann Cooke (b1895 in Nelligen, NSW). William was a Shearing Contractor in 1914 when he and Edith married in Cowra. They lived in Cowra and Trangie before settling in Mundurama via Carcoar, where they raised their family and William was a Shearing Contractor.
Bill worked as a Shearer and Farm Labourer in Mundurama before enlisting in the Army. Following his Discharge, he returned to Mundurama, where he worked as a Labourer and served on the Blayney and Cowra Districts Honorary Vigilance Committees (Fisheries and Oyster Farms Act 1935). Bill died in 1977.
