Sergeant Harry Batey (Service Nos:VX22068/10913) initially served in the AIF as a Private/Gunner with 2/4 Field Regiment (4 June 1940 - 7 July 1940) before enlisting in the RAAF on 10 July 1940 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Electrician, re mustered as Electrician then Electrical Fitter. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman and then Corporal, he served with 11, 26 and 36 Squadrons, and 12 Repair and Salvage Unit. Corporal Batey was in New Guinea in 1942 and 1943, and was a Sergeant attached to 1 Communications Unit at Discharge on 2 December 1946. His application to serve with the Interim Force was unsuccesful.
Harry was born in Invergordon via Numurkah, Victoria in 1913, eldest of two children of Edward Theodore Batey (b1882 in Tungamah, Victoria) and Ethel Agnes Johns (b1881 in Melbourne, Victoria). Edward (a Farmer in Katandra) and Ethel (a Teacher in Melbourne) married in 1912 in Melbourne, and settled in the Echuca Region - Invergordon via Numurkah and Katamatite, where Edward was a Farmer.
Harry was a Farmer in Invergordon in 1935 when, in Shepparton, he married Margaret Wilcox (b1911 in Shepparton, Victoria). Harry and Margaret settled at Invergordon via Numurkah, where they raised their family and Harry was a Farmer - in his Attestation Papers he stated he had also worked as an Electrician and Motor Driver. Following his Discharge in 1945, Harry and Margaret remained at Invergordon (where Harry was a Farmer) until the early 1950s, when the family moved to Melbourne. Harry worked in Melbourne as a Factory Hand until retirement. Margaret died in 1991 and Harry in 1992.
