Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of the four brothers (Fred, Ron, Allan and George), Gunner Allan Joseph Sherwell (Service No:V67403) enlisted in the ACMF on 17 March 1941 at Camp Mt Martha before marching out to 10 Field Regiment - graded Cook. Gunner Sherwell was attached to 10 Field Regiment at Discharge on 4 December 1943 (for employment with Brunton & Co Flour Millers).

Allan was born in Mutoa, Victoria in 1914, seventh of eleven children of James (Jim) Sherwell (b1867 in Burra, South Australia) and his second wife Jessie Cliff (b1878 in Morphett Vale, South Australia). Jim moved to Benalla, Victoria in 1885, and was a Widower with three young children and a Farmer in 1906 when he and Jessie married in Nhill, where they settled and raised their family and from 1914 Jim worked as a Contractor.

Allan worked in Nhill as a Labourer before moving to Melbourne, where he was a Builder's Labourer with Pollard Bros in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. He and Eveline Gale (described in his Attestation Papers as his unmarried wife) lived in Bendigo, where Allan worked as a Cook, before moving to Naracoorte in South Australia. Eveline died in 1977 and Allan died in 2000.
