Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

He was the fifth of 12 children born to Charles Holland (Snr.) and his wife, Jane Lomas, who was of Aboriginal descent. Two of his brothers, William and John Maitland, also served. His other brother Charles is believed to have enlisted in the eastern states under another name.
