Private Lawrence George Yates (Service Nos:V195125/VX118427) initially served in the ACMF (5 November 1941 - 25 November 1942) and was 'in the field' with 2 Australian Field Coy when he enlisted in the AIF on 26 November 1942. Sapper Yates served in Morotai and Tarakan (13 March 1945 - 15 December 1945) and was attached to 2 Australian Field Coy at Discharge on 9 April 1946.

Laurie was born in Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria in 1922, youngest of two children of George Roy Yates (b1893 in Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria) and Eveline Dorothy Davies (b1893 in Carlton, Melbourne, Victoria). George (a Cycle Mechanic) and Eveline married in 1913 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and George worked as a Cycle Mechanic.

Laurie worked as a Clerk and played football for Collingwood District before enlisting in the Army in 1941. Following his Discharge in 1946, Laurie worked as a Storeman and was recruited to play as Full Back for Collingwood Magpies. In 1947 he married Shirley Alma Helena Lott (b1921 in South Yarra, Victoria) - Shirley served in the RAAF (ACWI; Service No:174429). Laurie and Shirley settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Laurie worked as a Storeman - he played for Prahran Footbal Club, in 1953 celebrating his 100th game. Laurie died in 1990 and Shirley in 1998.
