Sapper Ernest Edward Whitrod (Service No:3677) served four years with Senior Cadets and Militia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 11 October 1917. Private Whitrod was attached to 9th Light Horse Regiment on 11 October 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Suez on board SS Port Darwin. Marched out to 2nd Field Squadron Engineers on 31 August 1918, Sapper Whitrod embarked from Suez for Port Adelaiide on 29 July 1919 on board HT Burma, and was attached to 2nd Field Squadron Engineers at Discharge on 12 September 1919. Older brother Stan served in WII, and younger brother Gordon and son Kenneth served in WWII.

Ernest was born in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia in 1895, second of seven children of Richard James Whitrod (b1873 in Kanmantoo, South Australia) and Frances (Fanny) Elizabeth Childs (b1873 at Encounter Bay in Victor Harbor, South Australia). Richard and Fanny married in 1893 in Adelaide, where they settled (Thebarton, Plympton) and raised their family and Richard worked as a Bootmaker and as a Driver for Messrs Ryan & Sons of Plympton.

Ernest was a Driver in 1917 when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1918 in Adelaide married Olive Beatrice Pedler (b1897 in Lorquon, Victoria). Following his Discharge from the Army, Ernest and Olive settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Ernest worked as a Labourer and Storeman. Ernest died in 1968 and Olive died in 1979.
