Youngest of the three brothers (Bill, Fred and Eddie) who served in WWII, Sapper Eddie Malcolm Merrett (Service Nos:V310357/VX150553) initially enlisted in the ACMF as a Private attached to 2 Field Squadron on 2 January 1942. Private Merrett was at Kapooka on 4 March 1945 when he Discharged to enlist in the AIF the following day. Sapper Merrett served with 2/1 Australian Forestry Coy in New Guinea (8 April 1945 - 19 December 1945), and was attached to 2/1 Forestry Coy at Discharge on 7 January 1946.
Eddie was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1922, youngest of seven children of Alfred (Alf) Merrett (b1883 in Leeor, Wimmera, Victoria) and Elizabeth Jane Eddy (b1889 in Broken Hill, New South Wales). Alf worked as a Labourer at Broad Arrow via Kalgoorlie, and he and Elizabeth married in Boulder in 1908. The couple lived in the Western Australian Goldfields - Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Beria via Mt Magnet - where they raised their family and Alf worked as a Labourer and Mill Hand. In 1923 Alf and Elizabeth moved their family to Nhill in Victoria, where Alf was working as a Shop Hand when he died in 1924.
Eddie worked as a Carpenter and Joiner in Nhill and Warnambool, and was in Melbourne in January 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1946, Eddie was in Melbourne when he married his first wife Nellie Eileen Hall (b1923 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Nellie was a Dressmaker in Melbourne. Eddie and Nellie settled in Melbourne, where Eddie worked as a Carpenter. Following their divorce, both Nellie and Eddie remarried in 1951 - Eddie to Florence (Flo) May Merrett (b1925 in Melbourne, Victoria). Eddie and Flo settled in Melbourne, where Eddie worked as a Carpenter until retirement. Eddie died in 2007 - 'Save the Last Dance for Me Love. Flo' (Herald Sun Death Notice; 2007).
