Jack was born in North Fremantle, Western Australia in 1916, sixth of eight children of Walter (Wally) Charles Onley (b1880 in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia) and Amy Ellen Jones (b1882 in Perth, Western Australia). Wally was a Butcher's Assistant in Adelaide before moving to Fremantle, where in 1904 he and Amy married. Wally and Amy settled in North Fremantle, where they raised their family and Wally was a Driver.

Jack was working in North Fremantle as a Labourer when he enlisted in the Army in 1942, and the same year in Perth married Gwendoline (Gwen) Marie Johnstone (b1915 in Auckland, New Zealnd). Following his Discharge from the Army, Jack and Gwen settled in North Fremantle, where they raised their family and Jack worked as a Storeman until retirement. Jack died in 1985.
