Sydney was the second of five children of Walter Smart (b1880 in Ararat, Victoria) and Alice Sophia Blake (b1889 in Ararat, Victoria). Walter - a Bricklayer - and Alice married in 1909 in Ararat, Victoria, where they settled and raised their family.
Sydney worked as a Labourer and Railway Worker in Ararat, and in 1938 married Gertrude May Matthews (b1917 in Melbourne, Victoria). In December 1941 Sydney enlisted in the Australian Army and was a Sapper (Service No:VX71284) attached to 2 Australian Field Squadron RAE when he was Discharged in October 1945. Brother Frederick Lewis Smart (Private; Service No:VX113368) and Cousins Mervyn Goulbourn Smart (Sergeant; RAAF Service No:401397), Harold James Smart (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:56560), Leslie Raymond Smart (Trooper; service No:VX77231) and Henry Roy Smart (Flying Officer; service No:428266) also served in WWII.
