IN LOVING MEMORY FROM HIS FAMILY

Ernest Leslie Horne was born on 11 November 1891 in Warnertown, South Australia, to James and Emily Horne.

Ernest enlisted as a Private in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 20 March 1916. In January 1917, Driver Horne (Service No. 14518) embarked for France aboard the S.S. Princess Clementine (later HMT Princesse Clementine) as a member of the 13th Field Company Engineers.

The 13th Field Company, Australian Engineers, formed part of the 4th Division, AIF. Attached to the 13th Infantry Brigade, the unit served on the Western Front during the First World War, where its "sappers" carried out vital engineering, construction, and combat support duties, often under heavy enemy fire.

Whilst serving in France, Driver Horne was detached to the 4th Division Australian Pack Transport Troop.

The 4th Pack Transport Troop was an Australian Army Service Corps (AASC) unit attached to the 4th Australian Division. It used horses and mules to carry ammunition, food, and heavy equipment through muddy, cratered terrains on the Western Front where trucks and wagons could not go.

In June 1917, Driver Horne suffered from influenza and trench fever. By August 1917, he had passed through Field Ambulances and Australian Casualty Clearing Stations. During 1918, he was admitted to General Hospitals in England suffering from debility and pyrexia.

Driver Horne departed England aboard the H.T. Euripides and returned to Australia in 1919. He arrived in Adelaide in April of that year and was discharged from the AIF on 22 June 1919.
