Donald was the eldest child of William Claude Garside (b1892) and Phoebe Lillian Armstrong (b1893 in Melbourne, Victoria). William (a Bricklayer) and Phoebe married in 1916 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their family. William worked as a Bricklayer.
Donald was a Textile Worker in Melbourne when he enlisted 'In the Field" in the Australian Army in July 1942. He was a Corporal (Service No:VX115397) attached to 6 Field Ambulance when he was Discharged in March 1946.
In 1943 in Melbourne, Donald married Lillian Victoria West (b1914 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Lillian was a Saleswoman. Following his Discharge, Donald and Lillian settled in Melbourne where Donald was a Textile Worker and Lillian a Typist. By the early 1960's Donald was working as a Mechanic in Sandringham, where he and Lillian lived until his death in 1991. Lillian died in 2007.
