March 1953 - Man Burnt At Greenbushes
GREENBUSHES Tues.-Mr. Luke Pense, of Cascade Greenbushes, was admitted to the Bridgetown hospital this morning suffering from burns. Mr. Pense arose early to make a cup of tea and in the darkness accidentally knocked over a bottle. Not knowing its contents, he struck a match. The bottle contained methylated spirits, which immediately ignited, causing severe burns to Mr. Pense's legs. His condition is satisfactory.
June 1953 - Sudden death occurred of Luke Pense, farmer in the Greenbushes district, at his property on Saturday, June 6, at the age of 47 years. Late Mr. Pense was carrying out ordinary farm duties when he suffered a heart attack from which he did not recover. He was a returned soldier of World War II and took over the property a few years ago.
Deceased was born at Armadale, Western Australia, and was married at Wickepin, on January 16, 1929, to Emily Ethel Turner.
He is survived by a wife, four sons (Phillip, William, Alec and Robert) and three daughters Myrtle, June and Mildred).
Gloom was spread through-out Greenbushes over the weekend as the death of Mr. Luke Pense became known. While working on his property last Saturday afternoon, Mr. Pense collapsed and died before a doctor could be summoned. He had been receiving medical attention for heart trouble.
The late Mr. Pense came to Greenbushes from Wickepin with his wife and family nearly five years ago. A returned serviceman he took up the property known as Cascades under the War Service Land Settlement Scheme.
Widely known in the football field as the father of two young players, Phil and Bill, Mr. Pense was well liked by all who knew him.
The funeral was held in the Greenbushes cemetery last Monday afternoon before a large attendance. Representatives from the R.S.L., Masonic Lodge and the football club all paid their last respects at the graveside.
Pall bearers were Messrs. A. Fullerton, V. Perry, K. Haines and D. Hill. The service was conducted by the Rev. Bewers and many beautiful floral tributes were received.
Chief mourners were his wife and family.
