Private Alfred William Heywood (Service No:VX14846) served in the AIF with 2/2 Australian Forestry Coy in England (25 May 1940 - 4 November 1943) and New Guinea (22 May 1944 - 15 September 1945). Sapper Heywood enlisted at Command Recruiting Depot Melbourne on 11 May 1940 and was Discharged on 24 October 1945.
Bill was born in Colac, Victoria in 1916, third of eight children of George Henry James Heywood (b1879 in Carpendeit, Coangamite, Victoria) and Lillie Jane Mary Wallis (b1887 in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria). George (a Drover) and Lillie married in 1908 in Colac, where they settled and raised their family and George worked as a Labourer. In 1912 George and Lillie moved to Carpendeit via Cobden, where George was a Farmer.
Bill worked as a Labourer in Bungador via Cobden, and in 1939 in Camperdown, married Hazel Betty Bubb (b1922 in Cobden, Victoria). Bill and Hazel lived in Cobden, where Bill was a Mill Hand, before he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Bill and Hazel divorced, and both remarried - Bill in 1947 in Colac to Hazel May Brown (nee Bellchambers; b1900 in Colac, Victoria). Bill and Hazel lived in Yea, where Bill was a Farmer, and by 1958, when Bill was a Timber Worker in Moyhu, he and Hazel had separated. By 1963, Bill was living in Bright, working as a Mill Hand and living with Myrtle Annie Gray (nee Archer;b1918 in Orbost, Victoria). In the late 1960s, Bill and Myrtle moved to Banana via Rockhampton, QLD, where they settled and Bill worked as a Farm Hand - Bill and Myrtle married in 1973 in Rockhampton, QLD. Bill died in 1991, and Myrtle in 2013.
