Born in Auckland New Zealand in 1906, Mervyn was the sixth of eight children of Hellier Oswald MacDonald Bree (b1871 in Auckland, NZ) and Thirza Annie Oemcke (b1870 in Hawke's Bay, NZ). Hellier (a Clerk) and Thirza married in 1893 in Hawke's Bay, NZ and settled in Auckland where they raised their family.
Mervyn completed secondary studies at Plymouth High School and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Maths and English). He served with the NZ Territorials and in 1926 married Dorothy Lillian Hodder (b1906 in Essex, England) - Dorothy had arrived in Wellington NZ in 1920 on board the Mahana. By 1924 Mervyn - a Musician - and Dorothy were living in Sydney NSW. Dorothy returned to New Zealand and Mervyn relocated to Mt Ulva, Old Bonalbo NSW where he enlisted in the ACMF in November 1940. Mervyn served as a Private and Sapper (Service No:N10045) and was attached to 2 Field Survey Coy in August 1942 when he Discharged to enlist in the AIF. Mervyn (Corporal; Sevice No:NX106457) served with Cartographic Coy Bendigo and was attached to HQ Cartogrphy Coy when he was Discharged in November 1945.
In 1943 in Brisbane, QLD Mervyn remarried - to Phoebe Isobale Mills (b1913 in Wellington nr Dubbo, NSW). By 1949 Mervyn and Phoebe were living in Sydney NSW where Mervyn worked as a Clerk. In the 1950s they lived in Hornsby, NSW and Mervyn was a Musician before relocating to Brisbane QLD by 1958. Mervyn worked in Brisbane as a Postman and a Clerk and died in 1994. Phoebe died in 2010.
