Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Corporal John Stanley Atkinson (Service No:VX39424) enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 17 January 1941 as a Private - graded Driver Mechanic, and later Fitter. Private Atkinson was attached to 2nd/4th Field Workshop and served in the Middle East (13 September 1941 - 18 September 1942) and in Borneo (8 May 1945 - 2 December 1945).  Promoted to Corporal on 10 October 1944, he was attached to 2nd/4th Field Workshop at Discharge on 9 January 1946.

Jim was born in Sale, Victoria in 1914, second of five children of Lennox Lett Atkinson (b1874 in Stratford, Victoria) and his second wife Josephine Mary Hundy (b1884 in Wentworth, NSW). Lennox was a Widower with seven children, and a Farmer, when he and Josephine married in 1910 in Sale, where they raised their family and Lennox was a Farmer/Grazier.

Jim worked as a Labourer and Driver in Sale before enlisting in the AIF. In 1944 in Sale, he married Ada Joan Bean (b1920 in Cambridgeshire, England) - Ada was living in Sale, and had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1922, arriving in Melbourne on board the Borda. Following his Discharge, Jim and Ada settled in Sale, where Jim worked as a Labourer and Driver. Jim was killed on Christmas Day in 1951 when the vehicle he was driving rolled - he was on his way to visit his mother. Ada remarried and died in 1957.
