26 October 1916 - enlisted at Sydney, NSW with the 17th Battalion and with the rank of Private.

Commenced return to Australia on 23 May 1917 aboard HT Ayrshire disembarking on 20 July 1917

22 August 1917 - discharged at the 2nd Military District as medically unfit due to blindness in the right eye
