Kelso was the eldest child of Ronald Arthur Jarratt (b1900 in Hay, NSW) and Lila Maud MacIntosh (b1902 in El Dorado, Victoria). Ronald (a Clerk) and Lila married in 1922 and settled in Wahgunyah, Victoria where they raised their family and Ronald worked as a Clerk. In 1949 they moved to Melbourne, Victoria.

Kelso was 'in the field' in Victoria when he enlisted in the Australian Army in March 1944. He served as a Private (Service No:VX145431) and was attached to 118 General Transport Coy when he was Discharged in January 1946. In March 1944 Kelso married Hilda irene Gorsch (b1922 in Nambour, QLD) - Hilda was a Corporal in the RAAF (Service No:100298). 

Kelso and Hilda settled in Nambour, QLD where Kelso worked initially as a Motor Mechanic before becoming a Truck Driver in the early 1950's. In the early 1960's the family moved to Brisbane where Kelso was a Truck Driver. Following Hilda's death in 1986, Kelso retired to Bribie Island where he died in 2007.
