Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Robert ‘Bob’ Cole was the only one of three brothers to return to Australia. One brother, 371 Pte. Walter Rivers Cole 4th Machine Gun Company AIF, was killed in action in Belgium on the 18 October 1917, aged 23.

A second brother, 3499 Sergeant Sydney Roland Cole 40th Battalion AIF, was an original Anzac and later died of wounds 13 September 1918, aged 22.

They were the sons of William Henry and Annie Louise Cole who were for many years the much-loved postmaster and postmistress of Wynyard.

Robert Cole’s death occurred at Wynyard after a very short illness in 1923. He suffered an attack of influenza followed by respiratory problems. He was in business in the town with his mother and the local paper reported he was a keen cricketer and footballer, and was very popular. He left a widow and two young sons and was only 32 years of age.
