Private Joseph Arthur Christian (Service No:V501041) enlisted in the ACMF on 19 January 1942. In 1944 DDG Manpower recommended twenty weeks Leave Without Pay (LWOP) to work for T Borthwick & Sons, Portland (abattoir). Private Christian was attached to 13 Garrison Battalion at Discharge on 12 April 1946. Older brothers (Ernest in WWI and John in WWII) also served in the Army.
Joe was born in Beulah, Victoria in 1910, youngest of eight children of Henry Christian (b1862 in Gerang Gerung, Victoria) and Emily (Em) Landt (b1873 at Rupanyup, Victoria0. Henry (a Farmer) and Em married in 1894 in Aubrey, Victoria and settled in Willenabrina, Warracknabeal where they raised their family and Henry was a Farmer.
Joe worked as a Farm Labourer in Warracknabeal and in 1934 in Beulah married Lila Gertrude MacPherson (b1913 in Beulah, Victoria). Joe and Lila lived in Beulah where Joe was a Greengrocer before moving to Portland where he worked as a Labourer for T Borthwick & Sons in the abattoir. Following his Discharge, Joe and Lila settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Joe worked as a Coolstore Hand. Joe died in 1994 and Lila in 2006.
