Driver Leo Leslie Sandiford (Service Nos:V305497/VX122754) enlisted in the ACMF as a Private on 26 January 1942 and served with 2 Car Training Pool and 4 Transport Coy AASC. Driver Sandiford enlisted in the AIF on 10 January 1943 and was attached to 27th Transport Coy AASC. He served in Darwin, NT (March - October 1943) with 2 Australian Armoured Brigade and was attached to 2/164 Australian General Transport Coy AASC at Discharge on 30 October 1945.
Les was born at Sea Lake, Victoria in 1923, second of three children of Herbert (Bert) John Sandiford (b1888 in Coleraine, Victoria) and Carrie (Doll) Adelaide Beatrice Pearce (b1895 in Tarnagulla, Victoria). Bert worked as a Plumber in Swan Hill, and was a Blacksmith at Sea Lake in 1918 when he and Doll married. They settled at Sea Lake, where they raised their family and Bert was a Blacksmith. In the early 1940s they moved to Melbourne, where Bert worked as a Labourer.
Les was an Office Worker (Clerk) in Melbourne in 1941. Following his Discharge from the Army, Les was working as a Labourer in Melbourne in 1945 when he married Margaret (Peggy) Mary Clover (b1922 in Gippsland, Victoria). Les and Peggy settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Les worked as a Driver and Cleaner. Les died in 2001 and Peggy in 2013.
