"Died of gunshot wounds on 3rd October, 1917, at the Norwich (Norfolk) Hospital, England, Charles Stewart Mitchell, 5th Battalion, A.I.F. (late of City Court, Melbourne), son of Alexander and Emily Mitchell, of 293 Barkly-street, St. Kilda (late of Macorna and Bendigo).

Born on the 27th of February, 1892, Charles Mitchell was appointed junior teacher at School 877, Bendigo, in 1907. He resigned in 1913 to enter the clerical division of the Crown Law Department. He was employed in the Court of Petty Sessions, Melbourne, as Assistant Clerk of Courts until his enlistment in April, 1916.

He enlisted on the 9th of May, 1916, and embarked with the 21st Reinforcements to the 5th Battalion on the 2nd of October. After training in England, he proceeded to France, and joined his unit on the 21st of August, 1917. Word came that he was wounded in the right leg on 23rd September, and on the 11th October came the news of his death.

His immediate official superior at the City Court says that he was at all times willing, steady, and absolutely trustworthy; and his former head teacher has testified to his industry, honesty, and faithfulness."
