Biography contributed by Paul Lemar

Albert Julius Sjostrom was born on 21 August 1888 in Port Pirie to Carl Richard Sjostrom and Mary Jane Sjostrom nee Tiernay. Albert and his siblings lost their parents at an early age with the youngest child being only seven years old when his father passed away and as the mother had passed away five years before, the then eldest boy Ted may have taken over looking after the family of five boys and one girl. All the brothers were indeed closely knit, this showed when all the boys went to the front in WWI and returned.

Albert worked at the Smelters from 1919 – 1925 as a Labourer. He never married and lived in Florence Street in a boarding house. Albert was often in the Port Pirie Hospital and on one stint he spent three years in the surgical ward. The eldest brother was Carl Edward Lawrence (Ted) Sjostrom married in 1919 to Edith Florence Elliott and moved to Adelaide. They had two sons and two daughters. The second brother was Alfred Sjostrom who made quite a name for himself in Port Pirie, he married in 1919 to Pearl Adelaide Cox and had 2 sons and two daughters. Brother, Olaf Sjostrom went to WWI and moved to Melbourne on his return to Australia. The youngest brother Nels Hoken Sjostrom returned to Port Pirie and married Blanche Victoria Porter in 1923.

Albert enlisted on 19 May 1915 at Keswick, South Australia, he was a labourer before enlisting and left Australia on the 26th August 1915 on HMAT “Morea”.
Albert served with the 27th Infantry Battalion, AIF and saw action in Gallipoli, France and Belgium. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star Medal, British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 5 June 1919.
