Frederick Winkler
Frederick Winkler was born on 13 january 1900 in Wallaroo, South Australia, fifth child of Charles William Winkler & Elizabeth Jane Hicks. Frederick attended school in Wallaroo.
On 9 August 1915, Frederick enlisted in the 10th Infantry Battalion. he said he was 19 years old - he was only 15 years & 8 months old. He embarked RMS Mongolia on 9 March 1916. Fred served with a infantry Battalion in line for 2 months before being transferred to AGM Rouen and placed on staff when it was discovered he was under age.
Frederick was returned to Australia in March 1918 and discharged due to medical reasons on 31 May 1918. His health suffered after this time and he later developed diabetes.
Frederick had a family of one son, four daughters and three step-sons from his two marriages. Frederick died on 18 July 1965 and was buried in Cheltenham Cemetery, South Australia.
