Joseph Henry Austin

Joseph Austin was 45years old when he joined the AIF on 23/9/1915.
He left Melbourne on 12/11/1915 aboard the HMAT Orsova as part of Sqr 2, Australian Remounts. He returned to Australia on 29/4/1916 and was discharged. He again joined on 20/9/1916 but was discharged unfit on 6/11/1916.
On 21/2/1918 he again joined for "home service", and was finally discharged on 5/4/1919.

Joseph Henry AUSTIN was born in Sunbury in 1870 and attended Sunbury State School.He was working in a variety of jobs prior to and during the war giving his occupations as Butcher, Driver and Fruiterer.

He was married to Ellen Jane Austin and they had at least one son (Lindsay Austin), and they lived in Sunbury, Victoria.

He first enlisted on 23/9/1915, at the age of 45 years and left Australia on 12/11/1915 on HMAT Orsova as part of the Remount Unit.

He returned to Australia on 29/4/1916 and was discharged.

He enlisted again on 20/9/1916 but was discharged on 6/11/1916 as unfit.

He enlisted for the third time on 21/2/1918 for home service and was finally discharged on 5/4/1919.

Joseph died in Sunbury on 6/7/1944 and is buried at the Sunbury Cemetery.

His son Lindsay, born 1898 did enlist on 23/4/1918 but was discharged on 22/7/1918 for medical reasons.
