Biography

"OBITUARY.  Matron T. J. Dunne.

The death occurred at St Ives Private Hospital Melbourne on Tuesday last, of Matron Teresa J. Dunne of St Helens Private Hospital Brisbane following an operation. The late Miss Dunne volunteered for service soon after the war began in November 1914, she embarked on the Kyarra and went to Egypt attached to the No. 1 A. G. H. After some time at Heliopolis she was transferred to the No. 2 A. G. H. at Ghezira Palace Hospital. In 1915 as sub-matron she returned to Brisbane on a troop ship with invalids and again as matron in 1916. She returned to active service as matron in chaige of a band of 50 Australian nurses going to India. There
after some experiences as second matron in a R.A.M.C. unit at Rawalpindi she was sent to Poona as matron of the British Deccan War Hospital. To the work of this immense establishment she brought to bear her wonderful powers of organisation and of physical endurance so that when the war was over she was sent to England and there was decorated with the Royal Red Cross by his Majesty the King. On her return to Brisbane after the Armistice she became matron of St Helens Hospital and held that office till her death. With the exception of her period of war service her nursing career had been in connection with that hospital from probationer to matron. She was a member of the ATNA Council and lectured for several years in general nursing for the Nurses Registration Board." - from the Brisbane Courier 23 May 1931 (nla.gov.au)
