Born in Belmore, Sydney NSW on 15 January 1918 a son of George Johnson Cross & Ellen May ‘Nellie’ O'Keeffe
He was working as a labourer when on, 5 Jan 1940 he enlisted in the AIF & was allocated S/No. NX9918 as Private in B Company of the 2/2nd Battalion
He arrived in the Middle East & was with the 2/2nd for their major actions from the Battle of Bardia the Capture of Tobruk then the disastrous Battle of Greece
He joined the 2/13th Battalion & remained with them for actions including the Battles of El Alamein, amphibious landings at Lae (Operation Postern) & Scarlet Beach (Operation Diminish) & the 1945 Borneo campaign (Operation Oboe)
He was wounded in action during the 2nd Battle of El Alamein on 24 October 1942
His service record for 4 August 1943 notes – Personnel protected under Geneva (Red Cross) Convention (usually referring to members acting as medical staff / orderlies or stretcher bearers)
William discharged from the AIF on 12 November 1945 & passed away in 1999 at age 81y, 11m
