Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
He served in The South African (Boer) War, WW1 and WW2 (Home Service). First service was as a Private S.N. 50, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Sergeant S.N. 554, 15th Infantry Battalion, AIF, WW1. Third service was as a Lance Sergeant S.N. N271345, Infantry Training Battalion, AIF, WW2.
When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th Qld Imperial Bushmen Contingent, he was recorded under the incorrect name of Thomas King Henderson in the original nominal roll and subsequently on Murray's compilation of all state rolls.
When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details (under Thomas King Henderson) were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father James Faulds Henderson, George St, Rockhampton. However, in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 1 p. 79, he is recorded under the correct name of Thomas Kay Henderson, and it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Rev. J. Faulds Henderson, G.P.O. Sydney.
His father, Rev. James Faulds Henderson was a Presbyterian Minister at the John Knox Presbyterian Church in Rockhampton in 1899 when Thomas originally volunteered but had relocated to NSW prior to Thomas embarking in 1901.
On his WW1 and WW2 Attestation Papers he noted; he was born at Strathalbyn (on 13 Apr 1885- WW2 record); his N.O.K. was his wife Margaret Annie Maud Henderson; and he had previously served in the 5th QIB, Boer war (on his WW1 records), and 15th Infantry Battalion WW1 (on his WW2 records). It appears he may have attempted to lower his age on his WW2 enlistment as BDM records in South Australia indicate his birth year to be 1883.
Thomas Kay Henderson was born in 1883 at Strathalbyn, South Australia, the youngest son of Rev. James Faulds Henderson and Anne Browne Henderson (nee Ireland). He married Margaret Annie Maud Carroll in 1906 at Cowra, NSW.
