Arthur Carl Rudrum was a 28-year-old single Clerk living with his parents in the Officer's Quarters at Pentridge Prison in Coburg when he enlisted in Melbourne on 9 September 1915. His previous service was two years and eight months in the Senior Cadets followed by eighteen months as a 2nd Lieutenant in 30 Coy ASC (Militia). He embarked on the Ascanius and was promoted to Captain on 6 April 1916. On 18 May 1917 Arthur transferred to 10 Coy then on 1 September to the 5th Divisional Train. On 16 March 1919 he was Mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s Despatches. Captain Rudrum embarked on the troopship Thermistocles at Devonport, England, for RTA on 11 June 1919, disembarking in Melbourne on 18 August. His appointment in the AIF was terminated on 30 September 1919.
