Lieutenant George Oakley Newton D.F.C., RFC was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, his citation in November 1918 stating “During recent operations this officer has displayed conspicuous courage in attacking enemy troops and transport in the face of intense hostile fire. No difficulties daunt him, and he can always be relied upon to carry out the task allotted him."
George was a member of the 15th Battalion and came from Toowoomba in Queensland. He enlisted in July 1915 and was a Lance Corporal serving through the Pozieres battles with the 15th Battalion AIF just prior to joining the Flying Corps.
His brother William Newton 25th Battalion AIF was killed in action in France 1 March 1917, shortly before his 20th birthday.
