Richard was born in Cronulla, New South Wales in 1925, youngest of three children of Thomas Dale (b1886 in Brighton, Victoria) and Ethel (Kitty) Kate Smith (b1885 in Buckinghamshire, England). Tom was a Labourer in Sydney when he enlisted in the Army in 1915, and was recovering from wounds (amputation of left arm) in London in 1917 when he and Kitty married - Kitty was working in London as a Housemaid. Following Tom's Discharge from the Army, Kitty immigrated in 1919, arriving in Sydney on board the Ormiston. Tom and Kitty lived in Sydney, Moruya and Cronulla, where they raised their family and Tom worked as a Labourer and Watchman. Tom enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in the ACMF and then the Interim Army until 1948. Following his Discharge, Tom (a Military Pensioner) and Kitty moved to Charlotte Bay via Taree, where Tom died in 1952. Kitty died in 1974.
