Private Frederick Ernest Howley (Service No:WX27296) enlisted in the Australian Army on 14 July 1942. He was attached to 28 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged on 16 May 1946.

Born in 1921 in Collie WA, Fred was the second of three children of William (Tom) Thomas Howley (b1896 in Devon, England) and Ella Carlton Miller (b1900 in Norwood, South Australia). Tom immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1913, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Osterley. Tom worked for WAGR as a Cleaner and Fireman, and in 1918 he and Ella married in Perth. The family lived in Busselton, Bunbury, Collie and Perth where Tom worked for WAGR.

Following his Discharge in 1946, Fred married Doris (Red) May Hegarty (nee Davies; b1921 in Perth, WA) in 1947 and worked as an Apprentice Body Builder. By 1954 he was a Mechanic living in Fremantle WA. Fred died in 1998.
