Corporal Robert Charles Newman (Service No:WX39177) initially served with the ACMF (Private; Service No:W51846) - 19 Garrison Battalion - from 2 June 1942 to 30 April 1943. Corporal Newman then served with 11th Infantry Battalion in Darwin, NT (15 September 1943 - 28 February 1944 and 20 May 1944 to 25 November 1944. From Darwin he embarked for Jaquinot Bay on 25 November 1944 with 11th Infantry Battalion, returning to Australia on 9 May 1946. Corporal Newman was Discharged on 17 June 1946. Siblings Jack and Charles also served in WWII.

Born in 1921 in Dumbleyung WA, Bob was the second of four children of John Newman Snr (b1872 in Moama, NSW) and Maria Lawrence (nee Gittens; b1883 in York, WA). John worked in Perth as a Kitchenhand from the early 1900s, and was a Horse Driver at Canning Mill, Kalamunda in 1913 when he and Maria married in Guildford. John and Maria lived in Canning Mills, Dumbleyung and Ballidu before settling in Dalwalinu in the mid 1920s. John worked as a Labourer and he and Maria retired to Perth in the 1940s.

Bob was a Labourer at Xantippe via Dalwalinu in 1942 when he enlisted in the ACMF and in his 1943 Attestation Papers stated he was was Farmer in Geraldton. Following his Discharge, Bob worked in Glen Forrest as a Moulder, and in 1949 in Midland married Mary (Molly) Maud Brady (b1922 in Greenough, WA) - Molly was a Munitions Worker in Midland. Bob and Molly lived in Glen Forrest then Tammin via Northam (where Bob was a Mechanic) before settling in Midland in the 1960s where Bob worked as a Mechanic. Bob died in 1980 and Molly in 2008.
