Darrell was the third of five children of Frederick George McQuade (b1899 in York, WA) and Elizabeth Mary Bishop (b1900 in York, WA). Fred (a Labourer) and Elizabeth married in 1921 in York, WA where they settled and raised their family. Fred worked as a Labourer.

Darrel was a Laabourer when he enlisted in the Australian Army in August 1943. He served as a Trooper (Service Nos:WX40348/W51789) and was attached to 22nd Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in June 1946.

Returning to York following his Discharge, Darrell worked as a Labourer and in 1948 married Doreen Fay Haines (b1928 in South Australia). Darrell and Doreen settled in York where Darrell worked as a Labourer and Plasterer. The family moved to Geraldton, WA in the early 1960s where Darrell worked as a Plaster. Doreen died in 2012 and Darrell in 2019.
