Corporal Lionel Francis Pettit (Service No:WX37567) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W23869) with 13th Infantry Training Battalion and was attached to 4 Division Provost Coy on 15 February 1943 when he Discharged to enlist in the AIF the following day. Corporal Pettit served with 28th Infantry Battalion in the Northern Territory from 25 March 1943, and embarked from Darwin for Jacquinot Bay on 24 December 1944 on board the Swartenhundt. On 29 January 1946 he embarked from Rabaul for Brisbane on board the Taos Victory. and was attached to 28th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 27 March 1946.
Lionel was born in Mingenew, WA in 1920, fifth of nine children of Robert Percival Pettit (b1879 in Dongara, WA) and Mary (Minnie) Anne Watson (b1889 in Strawberry, WA). Robert was a Farmer at Brushwood Farm in Dongara when he and Minnie married in Strawberry in 1910. They lived in Dongara, Strawberry and Mingenew, where they raised their family and Robert was a Labourer and Farmer.
Lionel was working in Kalgoorlie as a Miner and Trucker in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, he was a Process Worker in Kalgoorlei in 1948 when he married Jocelyn Ann Cole (b1927 in York, WA). Lionel and Jocelyn moved to Mingenew in the early 1950s, where Lionel was a Farmer before moving to Perth in the late 1950s and working as a Truck Driver. In the late 1960s the family moved to Upper Swan, where Lionel was a Butcher, retiring to Gin Gin in 1980. Lionel died in 1988 and Jocelyn in 2018).
